Program Overview

This intense one-week Lean Healthcare Certificate Program will give participants a hands-on, learn-by-doing experience applying Lean Philosophies and Tools in a healthcare environment. The training, exercises and simulations build the foundation throughout the week for the participants to apply them in a Mini-Kaizen Event Lab Exercise. This life-like healthcare experience using real healthcare examples is taught and facilitated by Lean practitioners, Leaders and Coaches each with multiple years of successfully applying Lean in healthcare organizations. 

The program will begin promptly at 8:00 am CST Monday and conclude at 1:00 pm Friday.

Monday:

  • Why are we here? See the “reality” of Lean in Healthcare 
  • What is Lean? Includes understanding Kaizen Events, A3 Thinking and the 8 Wastes in Healthcare 
  • First-hand Observation Skills Practice via “Learn-by-doing” 
  • Rules-In-Use for Healthcare
  • 5S for the Healthcare Environment
  • Lean Healthcare Simulation: Learn Lean Healthcare principles and tools in a highly interactive but simple team simulation where participants improve the process.

Tuesday:

  • Value Stream Mapping Training
  • Current State Value Stream Mapping Exercise of a “Patient Clinic Visit”
  • Future State Value Stream
    • Mapping Exercise of a “Patient Clinic Visit”
  • A3 Thinking/A3 Problem Solving Training
  • A3 Problem Solving Exercise

Wednesday:

  • Lean Simulation: Apply Lean principles and tools in a complex simulation activity with multiple scenarios and process redesigns

Thursday:

  • Reflection on Lean Simulation: Interactive discussion to deepen learning from the Lean Simulation
  • More Lean Healthcare Tools:
    • Standardized Work
    • Setup Reduction
    • Pull Systems
    • Mistake-Proofing
    • Six Sigma
  • Nursing Lab Mini-Kaizen Event 
    • Teams will apply the Lean Healthcare principles and tools they have learned to improve the work and work environment of a nurse in a life-like lab environment. The ultimate “Learn-by-doing” experience.

Friday: (half-day)

  • Leadership Traits for a Lean Culture
  • The Lean Journey of a Lean Leader and Case Studies
  • How to get started with Lean
  • Development of Your Personal Lean Roadmap:
    • Participants will develop Lean Roadmaps to begin or accelerate implementation in their organizations.
    • Box lunches provided “to go” in order to catch afternoon flights. Adjourn at 1:00 pm CST.
